On Tuesday, August 8, 2006 a call was received by a member and family of Oldies Car Club, East Bay Chapter notifying that Marie Ortiz wife of Oscar Ortiz was admitted to the hospital in Stockton, CA.
Unfortunately, with all the hopes and prayers the out come was not what everyone had hoped for. On Wednesday August 9, 2006 we lost our beloved friend "Marie Ortiz”. As you can imagine many calls came in, and one by one my Stockton members began calling me, only to give me the grave news. In total disbelief, this devastating and shocking news was the farthest thing not only from my mind but everyone else’s, that something like this has happened to a wonderful family and a very kind hearted person.
Once this devastating news was received we immediately canceled our 14th Annual Picnic, as our family was in need of our help and support.
We have not just lost a member we lost, a mom, a wife, a grandmother, and a friend. She was the backbone with the unseen force behind the success of Oldies East Bay Chapter. Marie was always the first to help whether it was at the picnics, car shows, and Quincenares. When planning trips, Marie was always the one handling the research and reservations on places to stay. When planning our annual picnics, Marie was one of the leaders insuring all the little things were being done such as, making ballots, tally sheets and inventories. She was always there to help organize all the wives on who could help and what dish to bring. You could say she pretty much did everything, as it always seemed simpler because of our beloved Marie.
Marie was the type of person who got along with anyone. No matter what she was always there, even if you just needed to talk she would just listen or you just wanted advice she gave it. To simply put it, Marie was “REAL” a “Real Person”, what you see is what you got.
Over the years, I had the privilege to have some real wonderful conversations with Marie, some were funny, some sad, but it always seemed to be enlightening. She was a friend not only to all the wives but everyone. No matter the situation it seemed she new how to handle herself even around the guys. We have witnessed her and a member "Julio" exchanging words but always in fun.
One of the best parts of our friendship was wherever we went we always had a good time. Although it seemed we just sat around in chairs, telling stories, making jokes, and laughing our heads off, these are memories I will cherish and miss the most of all the good times we spent together.
During this difficult time, seeing the "Ortiz" family, 4 kids, and all the Stockton members grief stricken, as a family we give our support, our love, and our prayers to you. We want the "Ortiz" family to know, you are not alone, we share your pain, your grief, when you cry, we all cry with you.
While we don’t have all the answers why things happened the way they did, we have no choice but to fall back on our beliefs, that "Marie” was needed elsewhere and her work here was now done. Now maybe, just maybe, it’s our turn to step in her shoes and carry on the way she would have wanted us to. She has touched so many people in her life and it is only fitting that we be willing to step forward and give back to someone who has given us so much.
We love you!
You will be missed but never forgotten!

To Maria's families, Our children went to pre school together during the 80's. when I told my son about Maria, the 1st thing he said was "no, she was so sweet" at 4 years old he knew she was such a wonderful person. Maria even offered her mother as a babysitter! Thank you Julia. We will keep Maria and your families in our prayers. God Bless your families especially during these difficult times.

Oscar, children and family, we were very moved upon reading of Maria's passing. You have lost a jewel, yet heaven has gained another angel. Just like she was rooting for Oscar at little league, I see her in heaven rooting for you to live, love and be happy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God continue to strengthen and comfort you, draw from Him, He is nigh thee.

Oscar and family, I was very surprised to receive the news that Maria had passed away (thank you Elisia for letting me know). Maria and I have been 'pen pals' since elementary school. We shared many of the joys that have happened in our families over the years, with a few pictures traded now and then. I was so looking forward to meeting her someday. Even though we didn't meet I feel a great loss. My prayers are with all of you.

My Tia Marie was one person that could make one of the darkest days brighter. She always had a joke to tell or something smart to say. Thats why i loved her so much. She used to pick on me all the time, no matter where it was or at what she was doing. She always said that just shows how much i love you. We're all gonna miss her and Steph said she never got her cherry pie with no seeds but that's okay. She'll get it one day. Give grandma a hug and kiss from us. Now we got two beautiful angels up in heaven watching over us. Tio and the kids whatever you guys need i'm here for all of you. Just call and i'm there.
